Huntsville, AL – The location of the 2022 NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division I South Regional Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships has been changed from Tallahassee, Florida to Huntsville, Alabama.
The Huntsville Sports Commission (HSC) and University of North Alabama (UNA) will host the NCAA Division I South Regional Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships for 2022 with assistance from the City of Huntsville, Huntsville Parks & Recreation and Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau.
“We’re pleased to welcome NCAA Cross Country back to Huntsville,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “Our outstanding course in John Hunt Park is attracting runners from across the U.S., and we look forward to sharing all that Huntsville has to offer with NCAA athletes and their families.”
Last year, the 2021 NCAA DI Cross Country Championships was held in Huntsville for the first time. It was the only championship originally awarded by the NCAA to Huntsville through 2026.
“We are excited about the opportunity to host the NCAA Division I South Regional Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships along with the Huntsville Sports Commission,” said Jeremy Provence, Head Coach of Cross Country and Assistant Game Operations Manager at UNA. “. This event will bring the best DI cross- country programs from across the South to the City of Huntsville. We will look to build off last year’s success to provide an even better experience for teams traveling to Huntsville to compete in the championship meet.”
The event, which will take place at the John Hunt Park Cross Country Running Course on November 11, 2022, will be open to the public at no charge.
“The HSC is thrilled that the NCAA is giving us the opportunity to host the Division I South Regional Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championship again in Huntsville. Our team works hard to create a stellar championship experience and that’s what these student-athletes receive when they come here,” said Mark Russell, Executive Director for the Huntsville Sports Commission.
The NCAA Division I South Regional Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships will have an approximate economic impact of $750,000 to the City of Huntsville and bring over 600 athletes to the Rocket City.
